Building Evidence-based Action into Community Outreach Networks (BEACON)
The Prevention Research Center will expand
the capacity of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network
with an innovative and ambitious plan to create a regional network
of community partners who will participate in cancer prevention
and control research among African American populations. This
collaborative project between the PRC, NCI’s Cancer
Information Service (CIS), and the NCI-designated Center of Excellence
in Cancer Communication Research (CECCR) at Washington University will build a major
network of community partners and systematically enhance its capacity
to support and participate in cancer prevention and control research
in African American communities.
The network
will include community partners in St. Louis, Kansas City, and
Chicago, the three largest cities in the Heartland Region of CIS,
and home to over 1.4 million African Americans. Each of these
cities has cancer mortality rates that are higher than national
averages for African American men and women. Working with a Board
of Community Partners, we will:
| 1) |
Establish
and foster the growth of a network of organizations interested
in cancer prevention and control interventions in African
American communities; |
| 2) |
Assess
cancer prevention and control interests, priorities, experience,
assets, and strengths of each network partner and enter
these in a searchable database; |
| 3) |
Conduct
ongoing Partner Forum meetings in each city to identify
research needs and gaps; |
| 4) |
Provide
training in Evidence Based Community Cancer Control Research – delivered in each city by local staff of the CIS
Partnership Program – to prepare network partners
to participate in community based intervention research
for cancer prevention and control; and, |
| 5) |
Enter
an action stage of partnership to obtain funding and carry
out collaborative research with network members who have
completed this training. Success in achieving these aims
will be evaluated using a network analysis that describes
processes and patterns of collaboration, as well as specific
scientific outputs. |
